Google Launches an AI Tool Providing Accurate 15-Day Weather Forecasts

Google has announced the development of a new artificial intelligence-based tool capable of providing accurate weather forecasts up to 15 days in advance, in response to the increasing number of climate-related disasters. This tool, called “GenCast”, was developed by DeepMind, Google’s AI research lab.

The company revealed that this tool has outperformed the current benchmark model, represented by forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which is considered the global standard in this field.

According to Google, GenCast demonstrated superior predictive capabilities compared to the ECMWF in more than 97% of tested cases, based on 1,320 climate-related disasters recorded in 2019.

Designed to provide more accurate forecasts of daily weather conditions as well as extreme phenomena such as heatwaves, severe cold, and violent storms, GenCast can anticipate these events with precision up to 15 days in advance.

Google also stated that the tool systematically outperforms current forecasts, particularly in predicting extreme temperatures and strong wind speeds.

With these improved forecasts, Google hopes to help authorities better protect populations from the risks associated with extreme weather conditions, thereby reducing human and material losses.
