Study: The Brain Responds Better to Sounds While Walking

A recent scientific study published in the journal “Neuroscience” has revealed an unexpected benefit of walking. This daily habit not only improves physical health but also enhances the brain’s responsiveness to sounds.

A joint research team from China and Germany, led by Liyu Cao and Barbara Händel, conducted an experiment to measure the effect of movement on hearing. Participants were equipped with electroencephalography (EEG) devices while walking along a set path and listening to different sound frequencies.

The results showed that the brain reacts more efficiently to sounds while walking, especially to those coming from the direction in which the person is moving. It was also observed that the brain’s response to sudden sounds—particularly from the sides—increases during movement. This suggests that the brain dynamically readjusts the sense of hearing based on the direction of motion.

The researchers believe that this biological interaction is crucial for quick orientation in the surrounding environment. They note that this discovery could open new and promising avenues for the development of future hearing technologies.
