Thirst Grips Tindouf Camps.. Water Crisis Spreads from Algeria, Exacerbating Detainees’ Suffering

The stranglehold of the water crisis gripping Algeria is now extending to the Tindouf camps, worsening the plight of the Sahrawi people held there and adding a new chapter to their humanitarian tragedy.

Credible reports indicate that the water scarcity crisis has reached the Tindouf camps, where cases of thirst and conflicts over water are reaching alarming levels between the inhabitants and the Polisario Front leadership.

Voices are rising from within the camps in protest against the state of neglect and discrimination surrounding water distribution. Camp residents accuse Polisario leaders of diverting water trucks to the residences of chiefs and their families, while the rest of the population suffers from a severe shortage of this vital resource.

The absence of any clear vision or plan to address the water crisis and the lack of serious measures to ensure fair and equitable water distribution among all detainees only exacerbate tensions and conflicts between the population and the leadership.

In the face of these tragic conditions, calls for urgent international intervention are multiplying to save the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps from the clutches of thirst and guarantee their access to their essential water needs.

It is also becoming urgent to strengthen international monitoring of the humanitarian situation in the camps and to ensure that aid reaches those entitled to it without discrimination.

What is needed is firm international action to end this human suffering and break the chains of thirst that shackle the lives of the Sahrawi people in the Tindouf camps.

The right to water is a non-negotiable human right that cannot be manipulated or exploited for political purposes.
