Pregnancy is a time that requires extra care, especially when driving. Pregnant women carry a significant responsibility: protecting their own health and that of their unborn child. One of the most important safety measures while driving is wearing a seat belt.
But what is the best seat belt for a pregnant woman? And what precautions should be taken to ensure maximum safety?
In response to these questions, the German Automobile Club has warned against the use of seat belt adapters specifically designed for pregnant women. These systems, according to the club, do not provide adequate protection for the abdomen. Crash tests have shown that the lap belt in these adapters does not stay in place under the abdomen and does not offer sufficient protection for the lower back.
Based on these findings, German experts strongly recommend using the standard three-point seat belt, provided it is fastened correctly. The lap belt should rest on the hip bone and not on the abdomen, to distribute the force of an impact correctly and protect both the mother and fetus. If the pregnant woman is not driving, it is preferable for her to sit in the front passenger seat, as most vehicles have better protection systems in the front seats than in the rear seats.
