Morocco’s Response to the Earthquake: A Unified Effort

Alalam24, Morocco, September 11, 2023 – The Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, Mustafa Baytas, confirmed on Sunday evening that all civilian and military agencies are working tirelessly to aid those affected by the earthquake that struck Morocco two days ago, causing significant human and material losses

Mr. Baytas, in a press statement following a remote government council meeting focused on monitoring the earthquake aftermath, stated, “Since the first moments of this devastating earthquake, in line with the Royal High Instructions, all civilian, military, and public authorities, along with various medical teams, whether civilian or military, have been working for rapid and effective intervention to rescue victims and recover the bodies of the deceased

The Minister explained that medical, military, and civilian services have been continuously caring for the injured. He mentioned that over 1000 doctors (from both public and private sectors) and around 1500 nurses, along with various hospitals near the affected areas, have been mobilized, ensuring that all the injured are being taken care of under good conditions

In the field of education, the Government Spokesperson noted that classes in some educational institutions in heavily affected areas would be suspended. However, plans are underway to ensure the continuity of education in the coming days. He added that alternative approaches would be devised to address the situation in less affected areas through consultation with families

Additionally, Mr. Baytas mentioned that, following the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch will chair a meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with establishing an urgent program for the rehabilitation, support, and reconstruction of the destroyed homes in the affected regions as soon as possible

On another note, Mr. Baytas urged citizens to exercise necessary caution and great discretion with false news, commending the national role played by journalists during these challenging times

It’s worth noting that during this meeting, the government council approved a draft decree to establish a “Fund for Managing the Effects of the Earthquake in the Kingdom of Morocco.” This fund will facilitate voluntary solidarity contributions from private and public entities as well as citizens
