South Korea is set to implement a new and comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence starting next month, in a move aimed at enhancing safety and transparency in this rapidly growing sector.
According to South Korean industrial sources cited on Sunday, the Artificial Intelligence Framework Act is scheduled to enter into force on January 22.
The sources explained that the law calls for the establishment of a National Artificial Intelligence Commission, the development of a three-year basic AI plan, and the imposition of safety and transparency requirements, including disclosure obligations for certain artificial intelligence systems.
The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that, if the law is implemented as planned, South Korea will become the first country in the world to adopt a comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence.
