Hidden Sugar: How Danger Lurks in Your Daily Drink

A recent American study has revealed that consuming sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda and artificial juices, may be more harmful to health than eating sweets like cakes and cookies—especially when it comes to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Led by researcher Karen Della Corte from Brigham Young University, the study emphasizes that not all types of sugar affect the body in the same way. “What matters is not just the amount of sugar, but how we consume it. The source, form, and accompanying nutrients can make a significant difference in its health impact,” Della Corte explained.

She pointed out that sugary drinks lack essential components like fiber, protein, and fat, which typically slow down sugar absorption in the body. As a result, the sugar in these beverages quickly enters the bloodstream, potentially causing a sharp spike in blood sugar levels.

The study was based on a comprehensive analysis of 29 previous studies, compiling data from over 500,000 people worldwide. It found that sugar consumed from solid foods was not clearly linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, while sugary beverages were significantly associated with a higher risk.
