A Hidden Marker in Your Blood Could Change Everything
Blood type has long been associated with health, but recent research has revealed a lesser-known and more concerning link: certain blood types may be connected to an increased risk of developing serious illnesses—particularly cancer.
While it is well known that genetics and lifestyle factors play a role in cancer risk, a large-scale study has shed new light on the influence of blood type.
The study found that individuals with blood types A, B, or AB may be more susceptible to certain types of cancer compared to those with blood type O. The research, which included over 50,000 participants, showed that blood types A, B, and AB were associated with up to a 55% higher risk of developing stomach cancer. Additionally, blood type A was linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
On the other hand, blood type O appeared to offer some protection against specific cancers—particularly pancreatic cancer, with a lower incidence observed among type O individuals. A separate 2016 study involving about 18,000 adults found that people with blood type AB were 45% more likely to develop liver cancer, while those with blood types O and AB had a lower risk of pancreatic cancer compared to others.
The underlying mechanism may be related to how each blood type’s immune system responds to microbes and damaged cells. These immune responses vary by blood type and could lead to cellular changes that increase the likelihood of cancer. However, experts urge caution, noting that many of the studies did not fully account for other important risk factors such as smoking, diet, or alcohol consumption.
It is important to remember that blood type is inherited and cannot be changed. This highlights the need for awareness and early health monitoring, especially for individuals with blood types that may carry greater risk. Though the connection remains complex and not fully understood, these findings offer a new perspective on the hidden risk factors behind certain types of cancer.
