Brazil has blocked access to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) for its users, in compliance with a court order issued by the country’s Supreme Court. This measure comes after a long-standing dispute between the platform’s owner, billionaire Elon Musk, and the Brazilian judiciary over the company’s legal obligations in the country.
Brazilian Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of the platform’s operations in Brazil after the company failed to appoint a legal representative in the country within the specified timeframe. The judge justified his decision by stating the necessity for the company to have a legal representative to ensure compliance with Brazilian laws and to address any complaints or legal disputes.
For his part, Elon Musk strongly criticized the Brazilian judge’s decision, calling it “unjustified censorship.” In a tweet on X, Musk added that this measure aims to “shut down the primary source of truth in Brazil.”
