The Importance of Multilateralism in Today’s Economic and Geopolitical Landscape

Alalam24, Morocco’s Central Bank Governor, Abdellatif Al-Jouahri, has emphasized the need to “resume the approach of multilateralism” to address the current economic and geopolitical context

In discussions with Taline Koranchelian, Deputy Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), within the special issue of the IMF’s Finance & Development magazine, Mr. Al-Jouahri stressed that “we should not overlook the approach of multilateralism, but rather assess the achievements and attempt to build positive relationships for a brighter future, alongside relying on more effective institutions with secure and evolving resources and means, which are also capable of responding to increasingly diverse, substantial, and costly demands”

He further emphasized the complex context in which the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF for 2023 will be held in Marrakech from October 9 to 15. This context is characterized by geopolitical and geo-economic fragmentation due to the changes currently taking place in the world

Mr. Al-Jouahri added that “it will be challenging to predict the outcomes of the Marrakech meetings,” highlighting the importance of prioritizing and understanding how to monitor and evaluate the measures taken

It is worth mentioning that this special edition of the IMF’s Finance & Development magazine is part of the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF for 2023, expected to be attended by more than 15,000 high-level participants, including finance and central bank governors of member countries, as well as representatives of civil society, the private sector, international media, and the academic community
