Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Laila Benali, reviewed on Thursday in Tangier the major features of Morocco’s energy strategy, which paves the way for an energy transition based on renewable energy sources.
During her speech at the official opening ceremony of the third session of the Conference of the Parties to the Mediterranean Climate “MedCOP Climate 2023,” Ms. Benali stated that “Morocco has great potential in the field of renewable energy, which can be utilized to meet a significant portion of the growing energy needs.”
The minister further explained that “by replacing fossil fuels, Morocco aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy in installed capacity to over 52 percent.”
Ms. Laila Benali also highlighted the climate challenges faced by Mediterranean countries, including rising temperatures due to climate change.
In this context, she mentioned the efforts of the Kingdom in mitigating the impacts of climate change, particularly through the establishment of low-carbon and climate-resilient sustainable development foundations.
Regarding the “MedCOP” summit, the minister noted that it serves as a link between the “COP 27” summit in Egypt and the upcoming “COP 28” summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to conduct the first global assessment of climate action. She emphasized that this international gathering provides a space for addressing energy and security crises, creating multiple opportunities to launch projects that enhance climate action in the Mediterranean region.
The “MedCOP Climate” conference is held on June 22 and 23 in Tangier under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, initiated by the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region Council and the Mediterranean Climate House, under the slogan “MedCOP, a lever for climate action in the Mediterranean region at the local and regional levels.”
The discussions during this conference revolve around topics such as “Climate-resilient cities and regions,” “Sustainable food systems,” “Sustainable management of water resources and the blue economy,” “Energy transition,” “Women and climate,” “Nature-based solutions,” “Climate migration,” “Peace, security, and decentralized cooperation,” and “Climate project financing.”
The program of the “MedCOP Climate” conference includes 16 thematic seminars, a business forum, parallel activities (training courses, business-to-business meetings between officials, company representatives, and research centers, civil society organizations related to “MedCOP Climate”), all taking place at various locations in the city of Tangier
