A Hormonal Secret Behind Your High Blood Pressure

A recent study conducted by researchers at Harvard University has revealed that a common hormonal disorder may be one of the hidden causes of high blood pressure, often going undetected despite posing serious health risks.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that nearly one-third of hypertensive patients who visit cardiologists, and about 14% of those who see primary care physicians, suffer from “primary aldosteronism” — a condition that disrupts the balance of sodium and potassium and leads to elevated blood pressure.

Although this condition is widespread, it frequently goes undiagnosed, resulting in complications such as heart muscle enlargement, strokes, or arrhythmias, explained Dr. Gail Adler, lead researcher and endocrinologist.

Dr. Adler emphasized that a simple blood test could detect this imbalance early, allowing for effective treatment that may include specific medications or, in some cases, surgical intervention.

The research team recommended testing hormonal markers in anyone diagnosed with high blood pressure, alongside following a low-sodium diet and maintaining a healthy weight, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan aimed at reducing long-term complications.ة
