Scientists at Voronezh University in Russia have developed a range of medications in the form of liquid extracts and tinctures, designed for the treatment and prevention of gum diseases.
Olga Tretynieva, head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacology at the university, explained that extracts from sea buckthorn leaves and black pomegranate have astringent properties, the ability to stop bleeding, and anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, making them particularly effective in treating excessive gum bleeding and gingivitis.
Tretynieva emphasized that many medicinal plants, such as sea buckthorn leaves, are not fully utilized in the pharmaceutical industry despite their therapeutic benefits.
She also mentioned that projects are underway to include some of these raw materials in the official list of essential medicines in Russia, in order to expand their use in medicine.
Additionally, Tretynieva stated that new pharmaceutical forms could be developed based on these plant extracts to treat and prevent gum diseases. There are also plans to develop medications for treating inflamed mucous membranes.
It is worth noting that scientists at Voronezh University continue their research into medicinal plants, working on identifying and extracting bioactive substances that can be used to develop new therapeutic drugs.
