Last July.. A New Heat Record

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced that last July was the hottest month ever recorded in human history. This means that hundreds of millions of people worldwide have been exposed to unprecedented and extreme heatwaves, resulting in devastating consequences for human health, the environment, and the economy.

These records confirm the reality of climate change and its devastating effects on our planet. The rapid increase in global temperatures is not merely a statistic but a clear indicator that we are facing a global environmental crisis demanding urgent and decisive action. The WMO stated in a report released on Tuesday in Geneva that this undesirable indicator is a result of the impact of greenhouse gases on the planet’s climate. It specified that global average temperatures, for 13 consecutive months (from June 2023 to the end of June 2024), have set new monthly records.

The same source indicated that July data, from datasets recognized by the WMO, will confirm whether this exceptional series will continue for another month. It emphasized that these indicators confirm the importance of the warnings issued by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, that “the Earth has become hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere.”

The report added that intense, extensive, and long-lasting heatwaves struck every continent last year, and at least 10 countries recorded daily temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in multiple locations. It specified that Death Valley in California recorded a record monthly average temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5 degrees Fahrenheit).
