The Oulad Afrej region, located in the province of Nouaceur, is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity for its figs. Renowned for their exceptional taste and superior quality, these figs have become a prime destination for traders and consumers from across Morocco.
Since the beginning of July, the region has seen a bustling activity with wholesalers from major cities like Marrakech, Agadir, and Casablanca flocking to purchase this delicious summer fruit, known for its quality and numerous health benefits.
Oulad Afrej encompasses eight rural communes renowned for fig cultivation: Oulad Afrej, Sidi Ali Ben Youssef, Sidi Ahssaine Ben Abdelrahman, Chaouibate, Mtouh, Bouelouan, Oulad Hamdan, and El Kawasim.
According to data from the regional agricultural investment office of Doukkala, the fig tree is one of the oldest crops in the region, covering an area of 2,235 hectares, of which 1,495 hectares are in arid zones and 740 hectares in irrigated areas, with a total annual production of 8,454 tons.
These figures confirm that fig cultivation in the Casablanca-Settat region is experiencing significant growth, thanks to efforts made within the framework of agricultural development strategies, which have contributed to improving quality, productivity, and farmer incomes, generating 2.1 million workdays per year in the region.
