Alalam24, Mr. Naam Miara, President of the Council of Advisors and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, chaired the 50th meeting of this body in Amman, Jordan, on Monday. The meeting focused on studying various regional and international issues, as well as the tasks of the high-level delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly to the Middle East
Participants in the meeting discussed the semi-annual agenda of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, which included topics related to the latest developments in the Mediterranean region. This included issues such as child trafficking and human smuggling in conflict areas, as well as the role of Mediterranean parliaments in combating these phenomena
The meeting also addressed the participation of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly and the International Climate Conference (COP 28) scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates in November
Mr. Miara highlighted that the program of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly includes field visits to Palestine and Israel in addition to Jordan. The aim is to bring the two parties closer together and work towards the possibility of organizing a new international parliamentary conference on the peace process, similar to the one organized by the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in 2009 in Malta, in partnership with the United Nations
Furthermore, he mentioned that the goal of the visit is to support dialogue between the parties through parliamentary diplomacy, bridge the gap between the key stakeholders, and examine options, scenarios, and compatible solutions in line with United Nations resolutions
He emphasized, “We will explore measures to build trust, prevent violence, improve living conditions for Palestinians, and enhance the security of civilian populations in general.”
Additionally, Mr. Miara noted that the convening of the 50th meeting of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Amman demonstrates the assembly’s support for the reforms launched by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on both political and economic levels, as well as strengthening and deepening North-South relations
The program of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly delegation’s visit includes several meetings with senior Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli officials, as well as with the Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)
The Bureau of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, chaired by Morocco, consists of representatives from nine parliaments in the Mediterranean region, five from South Mediterranean countries and four from its Northern counterparts
