UN Report Commends Morocco’s Efforts in Managing Migration and Protecting Migrant Workers’ Rights

Alalam24, Amid a challenging international context and many misconceptions, especially regarding migration and migrants, the Committee on the Protection of Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families issued its final observations on Morocco’s Second National Report on the implementation of the agreements relating to the protection of all migrant workers’ rights and their families. The report was discussed before the mentioned committee on March 28th

After a comprehensive review of these final observations and the recommendations made by the committee, it can be said that they came with several positive aspects regarding migration management, and they were formulated in a constructive, balanced, and positive manner

The UN committee shed light on Morocco’s leading role in regional and international cooperation and dialogue, the Kingdom’s commitment to international agreements related to migration, the regularization of the status of many migrants, the establishment of an African Observatory for Migrants, and the enactment of internal legislation that largely conforms to international frameworks related to migration

The committee also clearly highlighted some thorny issues, such as the events in Nador and the forced repatriation of migrants. This pushed the committee to issue recommendations regarding the need to harmonize national law with the international convention on the protection of migrant workers’ rights, strengthen measures to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking, and facilitate the regularization of the status of migrants who seek to renew their residence permits

In light of these observations, it can be said that the Moroccan authorities have taken significant steps to improve migration management and protect the rights of workers

In this context, Morocco’s leading role in regional and international cooperation and dialogue on migration, and the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration in Marrakech, were mentioned. CMW also highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment to several international agreements related to migration, as well as the human approach of the National Strategy for Migration and Asylum, which was established by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2013. This strategy enabled the regularization of the status of about 50,000 migrants, as a model that is exceptional on the continental level, the establishment of an African Observatory for Migrants, and the enactment of internal legislation that largely conforms to international frameworks related to migration

The UN committee’s recommendations will undoubtedly be a significant incentive for the Moroccan authorities to make further efforts to improve the living conditions of migrants and work to cut ties with some isolated practices that could undermine the achievements made in this area, especially all forms of racial discrimination and  combatting human trafficking networks report
