Sleep jerks, medically known as Hypnic Jerks, are among the common phenomena affecting a large number of people. They are characterized by sudden and involuntary movements, often accompanied by a sensation of falling or stumbling, occurring during the early stages of falling asleep.

Although the exact cause of this phenomenon has not yet been fully determined scientifically, the most widely accepted explanation suggests that the brain may interpret the body’s deep relaxation at the onset of sleep as a sudden fall, triggering a rapid response in the form of an involuntary jerk.

Specialists emphasize that this condition is generally normal and not a cause for concern. However, some recent studies have linked it, in rare cases, to certain medical conditions, including Parkinson’s disease. Research has shown that frequent sleep jerks may be associated with sleep disorders and insomnia in some individuals affected by this disease.

In some cases, these jerks may also be accompanied by a rapid heartbeat, which could indicate underlying heart-related issues requiring medical attention.

On the other hand, certain medications, especially antidepressants, may increase the likelihood of experiencing sleep jerks. Additional lifestyle-related factors such as stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation can also contribute to the phenomenon, as they interfere with the body’s ability to transition smoothly from wakefulness to deep sleep.
