WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has begun testing an innovative function that allows users to engage in direct voice conversations with the smart assistant Meta AI, in a recent beta version designed for Android users.
This new feature transforms chatting with artificial intelligence into a voice-based interaction that closely resembles a phone call. It particularly suits users who prefer speaking over typing, as well as those who wish to interact with the digital assistant while multitasking.
When opening a Meta AI chat from the conversation list, a soundwave-shaped icon appears. By tapping it, the voice conversation starts instantly. The user can speak freely, while the smart assistant replies with its own voice, making the exchange feel natural and similar to talking to a real person.
One of the most notable aspects of this feature is that it does not require the user to remain inside the app. They can switch to other applications while the voice conversation continues uninterrupted. Additionally, the “Calls” tab in WhatsApp also makes it easy to initiate direct voice sessions with the assistant.
The experience also offers flexible control options: muting the microphone, ending the session, or switching to text mode at any time. To ensure privacy, a dedicated microphone icon lights up when activated, letting the user know when the microphone is on. The feature does not activate automatically; it must be enabled manually by the user.
WhatsApp explained that the goal of this update is to make interactions with artificial intelligence smoother and faster, especially for those who prefer using voice as their primary mode of communication.
