At the Request of Knesset Speaker Ohana – Paraguayan Parliament Recognizes Moroccan Sovereignty Over the Sahara
the Parliament of Paraguay passed a resolution recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, following discussions between Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Paraguayan leaders during their visit to Israel last week.
Speaker Amir Ohana, the son of parents of Moroccan descent, has been a leading advocate for strengthening ties between Israel and Morocco. In June 2023, he conducted a historic visit to Morocco and its Parliament, where he announced Israel’s forthcoming recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
Following that visit, Speaker Ohana became the first senior Israeli official to update the map in his office to reflect the Sahara as part of Morocco.
During his recent meetings in Israel with President of the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies Raúl Latorre and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, Speaker Ohana emphasized the importance of the Sahara to the Moroccan people and highlighted Israel’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the region. He encouraged Paraguay to take similar steps.
Just one week after these meetings, and upon their return to Paraguay, President of the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies Raúl Latorre introduced Resolution No. 796, which was adopted on December 17, 2024. The resolution states:
THE HONORABLE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES OF THE NATION RESOLVES
Article 1. To reaffirm its support for the Kingdom of Morocco’s initiative on the issue of Sahara Moroccan as a basis for achieving a peaceful and just solution for all parties, in accordance with international law.
Article 2. To urge the Executive Branch to adopt the same position through official statements and to explicitly support this initiative in the international forums and spaces where the Republic of Paraguay participates.
Article 3. To communicate this decision to the relevant parties, and, once completed, to archive the resolution.
This landmark decision reflects the deepening diplomatic ties between Israel, Paraguay, and Morocco, highlighting their shared values of peace and international cooperation.
