The World Health Organization Launches a Global Campaign Against Monkeypox

In a proactive move to address global health challenges, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a comprehensive global campaign to combat the monkeypox outbreak. This campaign comes amid a rising number of cases of the disease, necessitating a concerted international effort to control it.

This strategic plan, recently announced, will span six months, from September 2024 to February 2025, and requires substantial funding of $135 million . This amount aims to cover various aspects of the campaign, from strengthening ongoing surveillance of cases to ensuring the provision of appropriate diagnosis and treatment for all patients, without exception.

The campaign’s objectives extend beyond treatment, focusing also on preventing the spread of the disease by reducing animal-to-human transmission and strengthening the capacity of local communities to respond to potential outbreaks. The campaign will also prioritize protecting vulnerable groups, such as healthcare workers and individuals in direct contact with confirmed cases, by providing them with vaccines.

In this regard, the WHO will launch an urgent appeal to mobilize the necessary funds for the implementation of this ambitious plan. The campaign is expected to receive broad support from member states and donors, recognizing the importance of combating infectious diseases and protecting global public health.
