Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine maker, confirmed on Wednesday that the Indian institute is “working on the development” of a monkeypox vaccine following the declaration of Africa as a global health emergency due to the outbreak.
Poonawalla added that “with continued progress, we will have more updates and positive news to share over the year,” according to Bloomberg news agency. The Pune-based institute did not provide details on the stage of vaccine development or the timeline for its launch.
The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern” due to the increasing number of cases, particularly in several African countries.
