A study conducted by researchers at Taipei Medical University has found that consuming flaxseed oil enriched with curcumin may help combat obesity and reduce fat accumulation in the liver.
The study was based on an experiment involving Syrian hamsters that were fed a diet high in fat and cholesterol for eight weeks. One group of animals received low doses of a flaxseed oil and curcumin mixture, while another group received higher doses of the same combination.
The results showed reduced levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol, in all animals that received the supplement. The effects were more pronounced in the group given the higher doses.
The researchers also found that the mixture promoted the elimination of fats and cholesterol through feces and produced positive changes in lipid levels in both the blood and the liver. They suggest that flaxseed oil may improve the absorption of curcumin, which is fat-soluble, while also providing complementary benefits due to its rich omega-3 fatty acid content.
The study authors emphasized that these findings are based on laboratory experiments conducted on animals and cannot be directly applied to humans. However, the results indicate that combining curcumin with flaxseed oil may represent a promising dietary approach to supporting liver health and helping manage disorders of fat metabolism.
