A “Smart” Brain Implant Bypasses the Eye to Restore Vision for the Blind

American researchers at the Rush University Medical Center have successfully carried out the third implantation of an advanced wireless brain device designed to provide artificial vision for blind individuals.

The technology, known as the Intracortical Visual Prosthesis (ICVP) system, works by completely bypassing the eye and the optic nerve. It directly stimulates the visual cortex through 34 wireless stimulators containing 544 electrodes implanted in the participant’s brain.

Still under clinical investigation, this innovation aims to help visually impaired individuals interact more effectively with their surroundings in the future. Following a four-week recovery period, the participant will undergo a specialized training program to assess the brain’s ability to convert these electrical impulses into meaningful visual perception, potentially improving mobility and independence.
