Study.. Physical Activity from an Early Age Extends Work Ability

A study conducted by the Finnish University of Jyväskylä, based on data tracking participants over 45 years, reveals that engaging in physical activity from childhood and adolescence (ages 10–19) through later life (ages 55–64) plays a crucial role in maintaining work ability and occupational health until the end of one’s professional life.

According to information reported by Al Arabiya, the findings show that the relationship between physical activity and work is cumulative rather than temporary. Adherence to physical activity recommendations in later life is associated with significant improvements in performance, following a dose-response principle. This confirms that maintaining physical activity throughout life increases the likelihood of remaining professionally productive.

The study also highlights the economic value of sport, as reduced work ability costs economies billions each year. Investing in youth physical activity—particularly through schools and ensuring access to sports for all social groups—represents a key strategy for building a healthy and productive future workforce.

Finally, the researchers conclude that physical activity is a long-term pathway that begins in childhood and shapes quality of life and work capacity in older age. They emphasize that staying active today is the best guarantee of being able to work tomorrow, underscoring the importance of establishing healthy habits as a priority to enhance public health and productivity.
