An Australian study reveals that women are more genetically predisposed to depression than men.

A team of Australian scientists has unveiled the results of a new study that could transform the understanding of depression and its treatment methods. The research shows that women face a higher risk of developing depression due to genetic factors compared to men.

Published on Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications, the study is among the largest ever conducted in this field. Researchers analyzed the DNA of about 200,000 people with depression to identify common genetic markers associated with the disorder.

According to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Australia, which led the project, women were found to carry nearly twice as many genetic markers linked to depression as men.

Researcher Jodie Thomas stated that this discovery “provides a deeper understanding of the biological causes of depression and paves the way for treatments tailored to genetic differences between the sexes.”

The team reported identifying around 13,000 genetic markers in women compared to 7,000 in men, reinforcing the hypothesis that genetic factors play a greater role in depression among women.
