U.S. Study : Sleep Disturbances in Heart Failure Patients Increase the Risk of Health Relapses

A recent study from Oregon State University (United States) revealed that irregular sleep and wake times among people with heart failure significantly increase the likelihood of developing serious health complications within just six months—even when other health factors or coexisting sleep disorders are present.

The researchers emphasized that maintaining a regular sleep schedule could serve as a simple yet impactful intervention to improve recovery prospects and reduce the risks of death or the need for urgent medical care. The study stressed the importance of adhering to consistent daily bedtimes and wake-up times.

According to Science Daily, disruptions in sleep schedules were associated with a higher likelihood of hospitalization, emergency room visits, or premature death.

Lead researcher Brooke Schafer noted that adopting a consistent sleep routine not only enhances overall health but could also make a decisive difference in the lives of heart failure patients. She highlighted that this approach may be an effective, low-cost alternative to lowering health risks.

Schafer further explained that fluctuations in sleep patterns can disrupt the body’s physiological balance, particularly in systems that regulate cardiovascular function, thereby increasing the risk of health deterioration in this vulnerable patient group.
