Why Do People Living on Higher Floors Live Longer

Who hasn’t felt tired and exhausted after climbing a large number of stairs?

We might have thought that this feeling was a punishment for choosing to live on higher floors, but a recent Swiss study has turned this notion on its head, revealing a fascinating reality that could change our perception of where we live.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Bern and published in the European Journal of Epidemiology confirmed that people living on higher floors live longer on average than their ground-floor counterparts. This discovery has raised many questions about the factors that might contribute to this strange phenomenon.

What allows residents of higher floors to be healthier and live longer?

Researchers believe that several factors could play a crucial role. Climbing stairs regularly is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that helps strengthen the heart muscle and improve blood circulation, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

A study conducted by Professor Matthias Egger and Radislav Pantchekha from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern showed that residents of higher floors are healthier than their ground-floor neighbors. This study analyzed data from 1.5 million Swiss people living in buildings with at least four floors. The observation period extended from 2001 to 2008, during which 142,390 deaths were recorded.

However, the study still requires further research to confirm these results and identify the exact factors that contribute to them. But until then, this study gives us a strong motivation to engage in more physical activity, even if it means climbing a few extra stairs.
