Study Confirms Swimming Is More Effective Than Running for Heart Health

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo has revealed that swimming may be more effective than running in improving cardiovascular health and strengthening the heart muscle.

According to the study’s findings, swimming contributes more significantly to increasing heart muscle volume and enhances the heart’s contraction capacity more effectively compared to running. Researchers also found that both physical activities improve overall fitness and increase oxygen consumption by more than 5%, but swimming stands out due to its additional direct effect on heart muscle strength and on the activity of molecules known as “microRNAs.”

Scientists explain this superiority by swimming’s ability to regulate cellular growth and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, which helps protect the heart from damage and improves its resistance to intense physical effort.

Experts also emphasize that swimming is an ideal activity for people suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, as well as for individuals with joint problems.

The study ultimately concludes that swimming is an optimal solution for improving cardiovascular system efficiency without placing excessive strain on the body. In addition to protecting the joints, swimming offers notable therapeutic benefits, particularly for people recovering from injuries or heart-related conditions, making it one of the safest and most beneficial physical activities for overall health.
