Europe Bets on Artificial Intelligence to Regain Its Manufacturing Leadership

The European Union is accelerating its efforts to harness artificial intelligence as a strategic tool to preserve its long-standing leadership in manufacturing amid intensifying global competition from the United States and China.

Although Europe lags behind the United States and China in developing consumer-focused AI systems, it holds a significant advantage: decades of industrial expertise and a vast repository of manufacturing data. This unique asset positions the continent to develop technologies capable of fully automating factories and better understanding the products consumers demand—an area where large language models and AI chatbots from the U.S. and China currently have limited industrial specialization.

This strength could help Europe make up ground in key areas of artificial intelligence. Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Katherina Reiche, stated that while Europe may have lost the race to build the most advanced large language model, it has by no means lost the race to integrate AI into its industries. She emphasized that this challenge is closely linked to Europe’s sovereignty, competitiveness, and its ability to safeguard its economic position in the years ahead.

According to a report by Bloomberg, European manufacturers are under growing pressure to increase productivity, which has gradually fallen behind that of global competitors, particularly in Asia. Industrial artificial intelligence is increasingly viewed as a key solution to closing this productivity gap.

Boosting productivity has become a strategic priority for Europe. A report published last May by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) warned that nearly $1 trillion in manufacturing value is at risk of shifting from Western Europe and the Nordic countries to other regions of the world.

In response, Europe’s industrial sector is stepping up efforts to leverage artificial intelligence to restore its competitive edge in manufacturing. Mistral AI, Europe’s leading challenger to global AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, is focusing its strategy on developing industrial AI applications designed to strengthen the continent’s manufacturing capabilities.
