Study.. Phones and Tablets Help Protect Cognitive Abilities

Contrary to the common belief that smart devices harm brain health, a recent study has found that their use may actually have a positive impact, particularly among middle-aged and older adults.

The research, which involved an in-depth analysis of 57 previous studies, revealed that regular interaction with smartphones, tablets, and computers could reduce the risk of memory decline and cognitive deterioration by up to 58%.

The review analyzed data from more than 411,000 individuals with an average age of 69, giving significant weight to the findings for an age group often viewed with skepticism regarding technology use.

Lead researchers Jared Benge from the University of Texas and Michael Scullin from Baylor University noted that daily engagement with digital devices may stimulate the brain through the constant cognitive challenges posed by technology, such as learning new applications or adapting to updates.

The study also highlighted that these tools can strengthen social connections—whether through communication with family or participation in online communities—thereby supporting overall mental well-being.

Published in Nature Human Behaviour, the research reshapes the perception of technology: not as a weakening factor, but as a potential aid to mental functions as we age.
