Alalam24, Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced the activation of a health vigilance system to prevent the potential infiltration of bed bugs into the country. This proactive measure comes in response to reports of bed bug infestations in a European country
In a press release, the ministry explained that it has taken coordinated actions with various public authorities responsible for health surveillance at border crossings. The goal is to ensure that bed bugs do not enter Moroccan territory through border checkpoints
The ministry highlighted that, in response to an alert from the captain of a ship arriving from the port of Marseille, France, on October 2nd, where there were suspicions of bed bugs in the crew’s quarters, the health surveillance authorities at the Tangier Mediterranean port, under the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, swiftly initiated the necessary procedures. These procedures included a meticulous inspection of all components of the ship, its cargo, and public areas on board. The inspection results confirmed the absence of any bed bugs on the ship, including bed bug infestations
The press release emphasized that the health surveillance authorities, in collaboration with various sectors, consistently perform detailed and comprehensive inspections of all transportation means entering or leaving the country through maritime, aerial, and land border crossings. These actions adhere to national health surveillance protocols and align with international health regulations recommended in the International Health Regulations (2005)
Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection underscores that these measures are taken to safeguard citizens’ safety and protect public health. They are implemented to prevent the infiltration of bed bugs into the national territory. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to promptly report any bed bug sightings to health and public authorities
