Specialist physicians have warned of the dangers of neglecting recurrent heartburn, stressing that it can go beyond being a simple symptom and become an indicator of serious health complications if it persists over long periods.
Experts explain that chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) leads, in about 10% of patients, to the development of a medical condition known as Barrett’s esophagus (Barrett metaplasia), which results from abnormal changes in the cells lining the lower part of the esophagus.
Specialists note that these cellular changes increase the likelihood of the esophagus entering precancerous stages, which may, in some cases, progress to cancer if not accurately diagnosed and closely monitored. Doctors have also identified a set of warning signs that should not be ignored, including severe heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chronic hoarseness, persistent cough, a sensation of a lump in the throat, or a reduced effectiveness of conventional medications.
The medical report emphasizes that early detection and adherence to regular medical follow-up are the cornerstone of preventing deterioration of the condition and reducing the risk of cancerous transformation. It urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to consult a doctor promptly to ensure proper diagnosis.
