Study Confirms: Eating Bananas Regulates Sleep and Boosts Melatonin Production

Several studies have confirmed that incorporating bananas into the evening diet provides the body with a natural boost to improve both sleep quality and duration, thanks to their richness in biologically active compounds that promote relaxation.

This effect is mainly attributed to their content of tryptophan, an essential amino acid used by the brain to produce serotonin and melatonin, two hormones that regulate the sleep cycle and facilitate relaxation. The website Verywell Health notes that dietary tryptophan helps people fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep.

To obtain the highest amount of tryptophan, it is recommended to consume a ripe yellow banana. In addition, the vitamin B6 found in bananas plays an important role in the production of these two hormones.

Moreover, bananas provide two essential minerals: magnesium and potassium. Magnesium helps calm the nerves and muscles and stimulates melatonin production, which is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from deficiency and sleep difficulties. Potassium, on the other hand, helps prevent muscle cramps during sleep.

The carbohydrates, about 27 grams per banana, facilitate the transport of tryptophan to the brain, while fiber contributes to a longer-lasting feeling of fullness, reducing nighttime awakenings caused by hunger.

It is recommended to eat a banana one to two hours before bedtime to give the body enough time to digest it and benefit from its nutrients.

However, experts stress that bananas are only a supporting factor, and that the foundation of good sleep lies in healthy habits, such as avoiding caffeine in the evening, reducing screen time before bed, going to sleep at the same time every day, and keeping the bedroom cool.
