The EU Threatens to Respond to Algeria’s Violation of Partnership Agreement

Alalam24, The European Union (EU) has criticized the Algerian government for violating the partnership agreement with Brussels, which it says has “greatly damaged relations between the two parties.”

Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, confirmed that the Algerian decision had hindered trade in both directions with Spain since June 2022.

In statements to Spanish media, Borrell added that “imports from Spain have almost completely stopped, which greatly damages relations between Algeria and the European Union,” noting that “the current deadlock benefits no one.”

On the other hand, Miriam Garcia Ferrer, the spokesperson for trade in the European Commission, condemned the Algerian actions that disrupted the trade between it and Spain, confirming that she was “prepared to take action against Algeria’s violation of the partnership agreement with Brussels.” She added that the European Commission “has expressed its concerns about the trade implications of Algeria’s decision, especially the banned shipments from Spain, since last June,” according to the Spanish news agency Europa Press.

It is worth noting that Algeria decided in June 2022 to suspend the Friendship Treaty with Madrid due to the Spanish position on the Western Sahara file, after expressing its support for the Moroccan proposal for self-governance.
