Study Warns Against Ultra-Processed Foods: Potential Risks to the Brain and Mental Health

Researchers at Sechenov University have warned that excessive consumption of ready-made and ultra-processed foods may be associated with an increased risk of several neurological and psychiatric disorders, including depression, migraine, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The research team explained that the most concerning foods include fast food, sugary soft drinks, processed meats, as well as products high in trans fats and added sugars.

Based on studies involving tens of thousands of participants, regular consumption of these products was found to be linked to a higher risk of dementia and depressive disorders. Increased rates of depression were also observed among young people who follow unhealthy dietary patterns.

Researchers noted that one possible explanation for this link lies in mitochondrial dysfunction, as mitochondria are cellular components responsible for energy production. Excessive intake of sugars and trans fats may promote oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, contributing to the development of insulin resistance in the brain and increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
