The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the increasing number of dengue cases worldwide over the past five years, highlighting that the situation is particularly worrisome in the Americas this year.
According to a report published by the organization on Thursday, May 30, 2024, more than 7 million dengue cases have been reported in the Americas as of April, far exceeding the 4.5 million cases reported in 2023.
The WHO also noted that “given the current level of dengue transmission, the potential risks of further spread at the global level, and the fact that the overall global risk is still assessed as high, dengue remains a major threat to public health worldwide.”
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is potentially fatal, particularly in children. It is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions.
