Experts Warn About the Risks of Common Painkillers on Kidney Function

Health experts are warning against the excessive use of common anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac, due to their potential side effects on kidney function and small blood vessels, especially among high-risk groups.

According to reports cited by RT, referencing Kidney Care UK and the UK’s National Pharmacy Association (NPA), these medications can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of complications in patients with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease.

In this context, Olivier Picard, Chairman of the NPA, stated that these drugs are effective and safe when used correctly, but can be harmful if misused. He urged patients to consult pharmacists to choose the most suitable alternatives and avoid long-term risks.

For her part, Fiona Loud of Kidney Care UK emphasized the seriousness of kidney disease, noting that a person can lose up to 90% of kidney function without noticeable symptoms. She added that such deterioration can significantly impact a patient’s physical and mental health, as well as their social life, highlighting the importance of early awareness and prevention.

Experts conclude by stressing the need for responsible use of painkillers under medical supervision to ensure safe pain relief and avoid potentially life-altering health consequences.
