A recent study has revealed that regularly consuming cheese may significantly reduce the risk of developing gallstones, a painful condition caused by the buildup of cholesterol in the gallbladder and bile.
According to the Daily Mail, eating cheese once a day provides the greatest benefit, lowering the risk by 26.3%. Consuming it two to four times a week reduces the risk by 20%, while eating it just once a week is associated with a 13% lower risk compared to those who do not consume cheese at all.
Researchers attribute this protective effect partly to calcium, which helps the gallbladder empty regularly and prevents cholesterol from accumulating. Cheese may also increase levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL-C), thereby reducing the amount of cholesterol secreted into the bile.
The study also warns that the risk of gallstones is higher among individuals with type 2 diabetes, those following rapid weight-loss diets, or those who consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates. Incorporating cheese into the diet could therefore serve as an important preventive measure for digestive health.
