An Innovative Genetic Tool Predicts Childhood Obesity Risk

A team of researchers from the University of Copenhagen, specializing in consumer genetics, has successfully developed a new advanced tool that can accurately predict the likelihood of children developing obesity as they grow older.

According to a study published in the scientific journal The Lancet, the tool has proven effective in identifying the groups most at risk, enabling early preventive interventions such as improving diet and promoting physical activity among vulnerable children.

The tool is based on DNA analysis from blood samples and is reported to be twice as accurate as the best existing methods for predicting obesity risk.

To create this tool, the team relied on a massive genetic database containing information from over five million individuals, making this one of the largest genetic studies ever conducted in this field.

Lead researcher Roelof Smit stated that the tool is capable of predicting obesity risk before a child reaches the age of five, emphasizing that early intervention can make a significant difference in reducing future health risks.

The researchers also noted that individuals with a higher genetic predisposition to obesity responded better to weight-loss programs and lifestyle changes, but were also more likely to regain weight after completing such programs.
