Diabetes.. A Silent Enemy Accelerating Brain Aging

A scientific study has revealed a strong link between diabetes and premature brain aging. The results of this research, conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, showed that uncontrolled diabetics experienced premature brain aging by an average of four years compared to healthy individuals.

This discovery opens up new avenues for understanding the complex relationship between chronic diseases and brain function. It highlights the importance of controlling diabetes to preserve brain health and cognitive function. Indeed, diabetes, commonly associated with elevated blood sugar levels, not only affects the cardiovascular system and heart but also extends to the brain. Researchers relied on the analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of over 31,000 individuals aged 40 to 70 from the UK Biobank database.

Artificial intelligence was used during this study to measure the relative “brain age” of each individual. Conversely, the research team concluded that changes in healthy lifestyle could help prevent neuronal aging, emphasizing that physically active, non-smoking individuals were less likely to suffer from brain aging.
