Japanese Robot Smiles with Human Cells

Japanese scientists have made a groundbreaking scientific advance that paves the way for a major technological revolution: they have succeeded in making a robot smile “naturally” using human cells. This achievement is a significant milestone in the world of robotics, where robots were typically covered in silicone skin that does not sweat or heal.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo presented the results of their astonishing study in the journal “Cell Reports Physical Science” and released a video showing robots displaying a natural smile, which some have described as “unsettling.”

The scientists created this “natural smile” by injecting gelatin into human tissues inserted into holes in the robot. This technique is inspired by how real ligaments work in human skin.

The specialists also hope that this technique will contribute to improving our understanding of wrinkle formation and the physiology of facial expressions, which could lead to the development of materials for organ transplantation and cosmetics.

The ultimate goal of the team, led by mechanical engineering professor Shoji Takeuchi, is to endow robots with the “self-healing capabilities” inherent in human skin.

This study represents a significant step towards a future where robots will more closely resemble humans, not only in appearance but also in capabilities.
