A new study by researchers at the Mayo Clinic in the United States has found that consumption of energy drinks may be linked to sudden cardiac death. The researchers warned that consuming these beverages, which often contain high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, can pose a risk to people with inherited heart conditions.
The research team examined 144 survivors of sudden cardiac arrest, and 7 patients in this group had consumed one or more energy drinks shortly before the event. The researchers also studied the type of heart problem the patients had, as well as the circumstances surrounding the event.
While the study did not prove that energy drink consumption directly caused sudden cardiac death, the scientists recommended that people, especially those who may be genetically predisposed to heart problems, avoid them or at least consume them in moderation.
