Apple Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Use of Confidential Information

Apple has filed a lawsuit in a San Jose court, accusing former employees of disclosing confidential information to OpenAI after joining the company. The legal action marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two firms, despite their partnership launched in 2024 to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices.

The lawsuit also names two former Apple executives, Jony Ive and Tang Tan. Apple alleges that Tang Tan took internal documents when he left the company in 2024 and later used his position as Head of Hardware at OpenAI to obtain additional confidential information through job applicants who were still employed by Apple.

In response, an OpenAI spokesperson denied any interest in competitors’ confidential information, stating that the company has no desire to obtain trade secrets and is continuing its internal investigation into the allegations. The legal dispute could complicate OpenAI’s plans as it prepares for a future initial public offering (IPO).

In May 2025, OpenAI acquired the startup io Products in a $6.5 billion deal to diversify its business and pave the way for the launch of AI-powered devices by 2027. The company, valued at approximately $852 billion, views the consumer electronics sector as a key driver of its future growth.
