Medical study: Knee cracking poses no health risk in most cases

A recent medical study has concluded that the sounds coming from the knee, such as “cracking” or “popping,” are not necessarily signs of a health problem. In most cases, they are a natural physiological phenomenon that should not cause concern, unless they are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain or swelling.

The study, published in the specialized Journal of Joint Medicine, analyzed data from more than 5,000 people of different ages over a two-year period. It found that about 90% of “knee cracking” cases are not linked to any medical condition.

Researchers explained the phenomenon by several causes, including the formation and bursting of tiny air bubbles in the synovial fluid surrounding the knee joint, friction between tendons and muscles against the bones, as well as minor changes in cartilage tissues.

The study emphasized that these sounds are common among healthy individuals and may occur while walking, climbing stairs, or exercising. It advised not to worry about them as long as they are not associated with pain, stiffness, or weakness of movement.

Experts also stressed the importance of maintaining joint health by adopting an active lifestyle that includes muscle-strengthening exercises, weight management, and avoiding physical overstrain. Such practices help support knee flexibility and reduce the risk of future injuries.
