Study: 5 Common Daily Habits That Accelerate Premature Aging

American cardiac surgeon Jeremy London emphasized in a report published by Eating Well that protecting heart health over the long term and slowing the signs of aging require paying close attention to everyday habits. He explained that certain common behaviors are associated with increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and additional strain on the cardiovascular system.

Dr. London identified five major habits that may accelerate cellular deterioration and the decline of physical abilities. At the top of the list are smoking and vaping, as exposure to toxic chemicals can damage DNA and overwhelm the body’s natural cellular repair mechanisms.

A sedentary lifestyle and prolonged sitting are also significant risk factors, contributing to a gradual decline in physical function. To counter these effects, he recommends moving for a few minutes every 45 minutes.

The specialist also warned against ignoring chronic stress, highlighting its potential effects on telomere shortening—the protective structures at the ends of chromosomes—and its association with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. He suggested practicing “box breathing” and taking regular breaks from screens to help reduce stress.

The report further highlighted the dangers of chronic sleep deprivation, which interferes with the body’s recovery processes and metabolic regulation. Other contributing factors include an unbalanced diet and the accumulation of visceral fat around internal organs, both of which can increase insulin resistance and the risk of diabetes.

As preventive measures, experts recommend adopting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, particularly by following the DASH diet, which is rich in vegetables, whole grains, and legumes while limiting sodium intake.

They also emphasize the importance of maintaining regular sleep schedules and prioritizing long-term healthy habits over quick fixes and temporary solutions.
