A recent study conducted by British scientists revealed that taking vitamin D supplements during the winter season plays a crucial role in strengthening the immune system and reducing the risk of acute respiratory infections that may require hospitalization.
The researchers based their study on the analysis of data from more than 36,000 adults from the UK Biobank. The results showed that individuals suffering from a severe deficiency in this vitamin are 33% more likely to be hospitalized compared to those with adequate levels.
The study also precisely determined that each increase of 10 nanomoles per liter in blood vitamin D levels contributes to a 4% reduction in hospitalization rates.
Commenting on these findings, Abby Bourne, an expert in nutritional immunology and the study’s lead author, emphasized that vitamin D is essential for overall physical health. It not only supports bone and muscle health but also has antibacterial and antiviral properties that help reduce the risk of serious respiratory infections.
The study highlighted older adults as the most vulnerable group, noting that diseases such as pneumonia and bronchitis rank among the top twenty causes of death for people aged 50 to 74, and among the top ten for those over 75.
Experts concluded that relying on dietary supplements is necessary to effectively raise vitamin D levels, especially during winter to compensate for limited exposure to sunlight, alongside natural sources such as fatty fish, red meat, and egg yolks.
