Food Waste.. A Global Tragedy Requiring Urgent and Collective Action
Alalam24, In 2022, the world witnessed a shocking level of food waste. The 2024 Food Waste Index report revealed that households around the globe threw away over a billion meals every day.
This figure is a stark indicator of the food security challenges facing humanity. The report found that 783 million people, representing one-third of humanity, suffered from hunger and faced food insecurity.
These figures are particularly painful when we realize that the wasted food could have saved the lives of many people suffering from hunger.
Faced with this situation, Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, stressed that food waste is a global tragedy that requires urgent and effective intervention.
It is important to remember that combating food waste is not just an individual responsibility, but requires global collaboration and concerted efforts from governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. We must work together to raise awareness about the importance of food preservation and encourage sustainable practices in its consumption and production.
