Casablanca.. Urgent Need for a Solution to the Tug-of-War Between Taxis and Ride-hailing Apps

Alalam24, The conflict between ride-hailing apps and taxis, both categories, is still ongoing in the major and minor streets of the economic capital. This congestion has not been limited to the roads, but has also spread to the courtrooms, especially after the incident last week in Casablanca where a ride-hailing driver was attacked, filmed by a customer in a video that sparked public anger.

The National Organization for Human Rights and Defense of Freedoms in Morocco intervened in the dispute and stressed that “ride-hailing remains desirable for a large number of Moroccans, and it should therefore be regulated in a way that also allows for the fight against the phenomenon of clandestine transport”, calling for an end to all the shameful practices that harm national urban transport and that emanate from certain taxis, according to the complaints filed in this context.

“What happened in Casablanca harms the image, security, and tourism in the Kingdom, as it is necessary to move towards regulating all modes of transport, at a time when the Moroccan customer complains about the mistreatment he receives from taxi drivers of both categories, which pushes him to request transportation via ride-hailing apps, even if they do not have licenses to operate in the field.”

In the same context, activists on social networks expressed their opinion on the services of the apps, launching the hashtag “Tous avec les applications” (All with the apps), and calling for quality services, respect for free competition, and the rights of others without exclusion.
