British nutritionist Nicola Ludlam-Raine, a well-known author and expert in healthy eating, has evaluated 18 common types of fruit to determine which are best—and which are worst—for breakfast. In her book “How to Avoid Ultra-Processed Foods,” she offers guidance on making healthy fruit choices in the morning and warns against those high in natural sugars.
The list includes a variety of fruits such as grapes, oranges, strawberries, and pineapple. Nicola explains that some fruits should be consumed with caution, as they can act like “natural sweets” due to their high sugar content.
Watermelon ranked at the bottom of the list as one of the least beneficial choices to start the day. In a statement to the Daily Mail, the expert noted that while watermelon is rich in water and vitamin C—and some varieties contain vitamin A—it is relatively low in calories and nutritional value compared to other fruits. She added that watermelon contains a moderate amount of natural sugar but is very low in fiber and essential nutrients.
